Strong Opinions @marksbirch: The Slow Extinction... →
marksbirch:
Look around the next time you are in a long queue or sitting in an office for an appointment. People are looking down at their phones. It is not just one or two people, it is everyone. It is on the subway, at the DMV, waiting at the checkout line at the supermarket, driving in our cars. There was…

I’m really, really excited to be writing this post today. Big things are afoot at Forrst, and I’d like to share a few of them with you. I am pleased to announce that Forrst is part of the latest 500startups Accelerator batch. Dave participated in our seed round in March, and when he asked…

What If Mario Jumped To The iPhone? →
caterpillarcowboy:
parislemon:
If Nintendo were to do this, their hardware business would effectively be done.
BUT, the software sales would be beyond massive. How many copies of Mario and Zelda would Nintendo sell on the iPhone? What about the iPad? What about Apple TV?
Nintendo is in the unique position where they could certainly have leverage to strike a special deal with Apple here. The...

Ice Cream Festival 2011
Because Type II Diabetes simply isn’t prevalent enough, our annual tradition of attending the Philadelphia Ice Cream Festival is still going strong.
This year’s festivities proceeded at a more relaxed pace than that of years prior. No one succumbed to the dangers of lactose overload, and everyone had room for celebratory cheesesteaks afterward.
The Final Tallies

UberMedia, Indeed. Bill Gross’ Twitter Ecosystem... →
caterpillarcowboy:
I appreciate the bold moves, but ultimately I think this is a terrible idea. Twitter has shown a willingness to put a knife in the back of 3rd party developers - wants to prevent them from shutting off access completely? Furthermore, Gross is boldly betting that advertising via Twitter apps can be successful. I’m not so sure - why use a mobile twitter app with ads when you can...

– Why 37signals is falling into obsolescence (via hiten)
Rafer sez: Horsepuckey. Apps are a fun, profitable, temporary bridge that is training “real people” to use the mobile web just as AOL trained them in the mid-90s. 37signals’ customers don’t require the half-step.

Building a Hackintosh
My friend and business partner Dave has been in need of a new computer. At work, he uses a passable all-in-one system; at home he only has access to an underpowered laptop. As the CEO of a dynamic cutting-edge web startup, he should undoubtedly be running more becoming hardware. Haim and I endeavored to build him a worthy machine, but there was just one issue:
Dave’s a Mac.

Christmas Card 2010
If I had to rate December on a scale from 1 to hectic, I would almost certainly give it the top ranking of “hectic”. There were gifts to purchase, a company to build, family and soon-to-be family spread across various states to visit, and a looming wedding to plan.
Despite this, I wanted to carve out time to design and send Christmas Cards. Crafting up last season’s card was...

Ice Cream Festival 2010
The Ice Cream 2010: The Ice Cream Festival OF THE FUTURE!
Please note that Dippin’ Dots did not make an appearance.
Our intrepid group of ice cream lovers braved the beautiful day and friendly crowds to push ourselves to our absolute limits.
And, like, support childhood leukemia research.
Would we break our personal records? Would a new overall festival record be set? Find...

I’m just kind of astounded by the ridiculousness of what you see below by mcdavis and caterpillarcowboy. The most ridiculous statement of all is the blanket one by mcdavis: “The internet is not private.” Of course parts of the Internet are private. My gmail, I certainly hope, my…

I was thinking the same thing. The people who would benefit the most from food innovation — the poor and lower middle class — are also the ones who can’t afford fresh food. Obesity is a huge problem because they can’t afford to buy fresh produce even if they want to. So the big…

I'm playing a rock show!
It’s been a while since I’ve played music up in front of other humans, but next week THIS WILL CHANGE.
On Jan 23 I’ll be one of the openers for Family Fun at Hank’s Saloon in Brooklyn ( 43 3rd Ave ). As you can tell by their name, they know how to have a good time.
Will I remember how to play the guitar in time? Do I have the facility to express cogent...

2010 Predictions
caterpillarcowboy:
Here are my predictions for 2010:
Badges and game mechanics - Driven by the success of foursquare and Farmville, everyone is going to want badges and game mechanics embedded in their apps. Hell, we might do it, too. Not only do well-tuned game mechanics increase engagement, it also increases user exploration and education. Of course, it’s easy to do it badly, and the results...

Desert Scorpion Animation
Here’s one of my first experiments with Flipnote Studio! The entire sequence was composed on my shiny new DSi.
I think I could get used to this tiny animation thing.
( If you’re seeing this on your Tumblr dashboard, you’ll have to click and open the post itself. It doesn’t appear to work in the dashboard. )

Dissected: Christmas Card 2009
Merry Two-Days-After-Christmas!
As Kellbot and I are spending the rest of the year decompressing, we’ve attempted to drastically cut our “staring at a computer screen” time. Like all good addicts, however, I lapsed to assemble this Christmas card post-mortem.
Leading Internet enthusiasts agree that mouseover comparison images are a delightful way to spend 12 seconds...

The Mythical Apple Tablet
I am amazed by how rumors about the “Apple Tablet” continue to endure, particularly among high-profile members of tech journalism. Folks are getting paid to over-analyze job descriptions, argue about the price point of the device, and write press releases about their company’s future support for the device. This activity, by the way, is all centered around a product that...
Backhoecopters Desktop Background
Leading scientists agree that the Backhoecopter is the single greatest threat to the Internet at large.
I made this background to serve as a constant reminder of its cold aura of menace.

New on Postling: Update your Facebook Pages!
One of the most-requested enhancements our users have been asking for is support for Facebook Pages.
We’re happy to announce that this ability is *now* a part of Postling!
Just go to the Manage Services page and click “Facebook” to link up all of the Facebook Pages your account has access to. Let us know how you like it!
New on Postling: Read your comments!
We’ve just released an exciting addition to Postling: Now you can read all of the comments made on your posts, regardless of where they’ve been posted!
You’ll be able to see the most recent comments made on your posts at the top of your logged-in home page.
Take it for a spin! We hope this makes it *much* easier to read and respond to what folks are saying about your content.
Working on another big feature for Postling
We’ve been told you’re not supposed to sell “features”, you’re supposed to sell “benefits”.
I suppose the benefit of what I’m working on now could be described as “Eliminiate the need to log into eight different sites every day”. Thus far we’ve built something that lets you publish your content all over the web; now we’re...
